Alghero Hotels
Situated on the north-west coast of Sardinia, Alghero is a small but perfectly preserved fishing town, which retains many fascinating traces of Catalan rule from the 14th to 18th centuries. Though it may lack the entertainment venues of a larger resort, it is car-free, lending a peaceful, unspoilt atmosphere to the medieval centre, which, with its lovely cobbled streets, is full of traditional bars and restaurant, as well as one-off boutique shops.
Alghero's skyline is dominated by seven towers, built to strengthen its defences. But the principal sights are the churches. These include the Church of San Michele, with an octagonal dome covered in brightly coloured enamel tiles, and the Cattedrale di Santa Maria, with its mighty Doric façade.
The town’s pine forest offers a haven from the summer sun, while lovely, unspoilt coastline, dotted with grottoes and sandy beaches, stretches beyond the marina. Indeed, an ideal excursion would be the three-hour round boat trip north to Grotta di Nettuno, a cave system with remarkable rock formations at the bottom of a towering cliff. Do bear in mind, however, that Alghero is strictly a summer resort: it all but empties out of season.
